Recovering a VMware Instance with Repave

During VMware recovery, you can repave your protected VMware instances by replacing the operating system disk with a known clean version. Repaving ensures that vulnerabilities or malicious changes made to the OS are erased, providing a secure and reliable recovery solution for users.

You can recover with repave to certain cloud service providers. For more information, see Recovery with Repave for VMs/Instances.

Prerequisites

If a passkey is configured for restores, you must have the passkey.

Procedure

  1. From the Command Center navigation pane, go to Protect > Virtualization.

    The Overview page appears.

  2. On the VM groups tab, in the row for the VM group, click the action button action_button, and then click Restore.

The Select restore type page appears.

  3. Click Repave.

    The Repave page appears.

  4. To select a specific source copy and/or Backup Gateway for the restore, in the upper-right area of the page, click Change source.

The Change source dialog box appears.

  5. Select the source copy and Backup Gateway as required, and then click OK.

By default, the software automatically selects the Backup Gateway and source copy as follows:

    • Restore from copy: With the default value of Automatic, the software searches for the requested data in the primary copy. If the data is not found in the primary copy, the software selects a secondary or auxiliary copy.

    • MediaAgent: With the default value of Automatic, software attempts to use the MediaAgent that performed the backup.

  6. Select the disk to restore.

    Note

The OS disk and data disks of the original instance are attached to the new VM as data disks.

  7. Click Restore.

The Repave options dialog box appears.

  8. For Restore as, select the cloud service provider to repave the VM to.

  9. Specify the other settings.

For more information, see the recovery with repave page for the destination hypervisor.

  10. Click Submit.
