You can install a Commvault Cloud backup gateway on a virtual machine or a physical server in an on-prem datacenter.
You must install an on-prem backup gateway for the following cases:

To protect on-premises applications

To store backups locally

When outbound network security is restricted or blocked
Important
After you install an on-prem backup gateway for one workload, you can use the same backup gateway to protect other on-prem workloads.
