Backup Gateways

Backup gateways handle important functions and use cases.

Functions

Backup gateways function as both access nodes and MediaAgents:

• As access nodes, backup gateways connect with, discover, back up, and restore your data source (which the Commvault Cloud control panel cannot access directly by the Commvault Cloud control plane).

• As MediaAgents, backup gateways move data to and from the access nodes to the storage targets. Backup gateways also perform deduplication operations before moving data to storage targets.

Use Cases

The following use cases require a backup gateway.

Protecting On-Premises Data Sources

You want to protect on-premises data sources, and you require a local copy of the backup data. For more information, see System Requirements for On-Premises Backup Gateways.

Use the configuration wizard for the following on-premises workloads to create an on-premises backup gateway:

• File Servers

• Hyper-V Virtual Machines

• Nutanix AHV

• Oracle

• Oracle RAC

• SAP HANA

• SQL Server

• VMware Virtual Machines

Protecting Cloud Data Sources

You want to protect cloud data sources that have restricted network access. For more information, see the following pages:
