Converting to Hyper-V

When restoring a virtual machine from backup, you can choose to restore the VM as a Hyper-V virtual machine. Using this option, you can duplicate a virtual machine to the Hyper-V environment, or migrate a VM to Hyper-V.

Source Hypervisors

You can convert VMs to Hyper-V from the following hypervisors:

  • VMware streaming backups
  • Azure Resource Manager streaming backups

You cannot restore encrypted Azure disks to Hyper-V.

Requirements

  • Before performing backups that you use for conversions, configure source VMs to use DHCP instead of using static IP addresses. The conversion process does not restore static IP addresses.
  • To get the most up-to-date instance of a virtual machine, power off the source VM, perform a backup, and then power on the source VM.
  • Before you perform a backup for a Linux source VM that runs Red Hat, verify that required Hyper-V drivers are installed on the source VM. For more information, see Verifying that Required Hyper-V drivers Are Installed on the Source VM.
  • The destination client must be a Hyper-V server, with Windows Server 2012 R2 or a more recent version, that has the Virtual Server Agent installed.
  • To enable deployment in Hyper-V, from the Command Center navigation pane, go to Protect > Virtualization, and then in the upper-right area of the page, click Add hypervisor.
  • The Hyper-V VM name can contain only alphanumeric characters and the '-' character. The name cannot contain any Unicode Transformation Format (UTF) characters.

Procedure

  1. From the Command Center navigation pane, go to Protect > Virtualization.

    The Virtual machines page appears.

  2. Click the VM groups tab.

    The VM group page appears.

  3. Under VM groups area, in the row for the VM group that contains the VM, click the action button action_button and then click Restore.

    The Select restore type page appears.

  4. Select Full instance to restore one or more full virtual machines.

    The Restore page appears.

  5. Select the content to restore, and then click Restore.

    The Restore options dialog box appears.

  6. From the Restore as list, select Microsoft Hyper-V.

  7. From the Virtualization Client list, select the Hyper-V hypervisor to restore.

  8. From the Destination Client list, select the target host.

    All Hyper-V nodes appear.

  9. To enable the restored VM to migrate to another node in the cluster, select Register virtual machine with failover cluster.

  10. In the Change VM display name to box, enter a new virtual machine name.

    This option does not display if you are restoring multiple VMs. If an existing VM with the same name exists on the destination host and you do not select Overwrite VMs if they already exist, the restore job fails.

  11. Click Submit to run the restore job.
