Important

Personal chats are not backed up by default. Microsoft requires an additional charge for every backup of personal chats because the backup operation requires the use of paid Microsoft export APIs. For more information about the cost, in the Microsoft documentation, see Payment models and licensing requirements for Microsoft Teams APIs. Also, backup of personal chats is not supported in the GCC High Cloud Region

When You Can Perform Backups

  • On a schedule: The server plan that you assign manages scheduled backups

For new customers who onboard after April 19, 2024, two schedules are created for each Office 365 Server Plan during the onboarding process. Existing customers will continue to use the same single schedule. The two new schedules work as follows:

    • Schedule 1: A backup job for items that do not meet SLA runs once every 8 hours. The job commits after 32 hours. All items that were never backed up or backed-up items that are older than 30 days are included in the backup.

    • Schedule 2: A backup job for items that meet SLA but were not recently backed up runs once very 8 hours. The job commits after 22 hours. All items that are more than 17 hours old and less than 30 days old are included in the backup.

  • On demand: You can perform on-demand backups at any time

What Is Not Backed Up

  • Data from SharePoint folders other than the channel folder. You can back up documents only from the channel folder.
  • Wikis: Microsoft no longer supports wikis, so they cannot be backed up.
  • Preservation Hold Library
  • OneNote tab data will not be backed up. It will be protected using the SharePoint agent.
  • Data under the default Notes tab will not be backed up. It will be protected using the SharePoint agent.

What Cannot Be Restored

  • Posts or channels cannot be restored to a file location. You can restore only Teams uploaded files to a file location.
  • Wikis: Microsoft no longer supports wikis, so they cannot be restored.
  • Preservation Hold Library
  • OneNote tab data will not be restored. It will be protected using the SharePoint agent.
  • Data under the default Notes tab will not be restored. It will be protected using the SharePoint agent.

Considerations

  • For items to be backed up, each team must have at least one user that is assigned the owner role.
  • After restoring a custom tab, you must manually link the content of the tab to view it.
  • To resolve a 400 Bad Request error response when creating a channel, see Commvault KB article 84762.
