Licensing
Active Directory and Azure Active Directory are licensed based on the total number of enabled AD user accounts. This number is arrived at by taking the higher of the following two counts:
-
The total number of enabled user accounts in all Active Directory domains being managed with the product. An Active Directory domain is being managed by the product when there is a Commvault Cloud agent installed on at least one of the domain controllers in that domain.
-
The total number of enabled user accounts in all Azure AD tenants being managed with the product. An Azure AD tenant is being managed by the product if it has been configured for backups in Commvault Cloud. An enabled user account is any user account with a UserType of "Member". User accounts with a UserType of "Guest" are not counted.
For instructions on how to view these counts in your environment see Subscription usage below.
If the number of enabled user accounts in the AD domains is higher than the number of enabled user accounts in the Azure AD tenants, then licenses are required for the number of enabled user accounts in the AD domains and those licenses cover both the AD and Azure AD workloads.
Conversely, if the number of enabled user accounts in the Azure AD tenants is higher than the number of enabled user accounts in the AD domains, then licenses are required for the number of enabled user accounts in the Azure AD tenants and those licenses cover both the Azure AD and AD workloads.
An enabled user account is any user account in the directory which has not been set to disabled.
License Enforcement
-
A Commvault Cloud tenant is in a state of overage if the tenant has exceeded their purchased user count.
-
When customers exceed 100% of their purchased users, the Commvault Cloud software sends an alert notification to all tenant administrators to request that they purchase additional user licenses. The alert notification also warns the tenant administrators that backups will stop if the number of users exceeds what they have purchased.
-
When customers reach 100% of their subscription usage, they will enter a 60-day grace period. In that month grace period, they must reduce their users or purchase additional licenses. Customers should contact their Customer Success Team for assistance with purchasing. At the end of the 60-day grace period, the Commvault Cloud software stops customer backups. For example, if an overage is detected on September 20, backups will stop on November 20 if the overage is unresolved.
