Enabling Incremental Stream-Based Backups for Existing Amazon DynamoDB Instances

Starting with Commvault Cloud Release (11.40), Commvault Cloud supports stream-based incremental backups. Instances created prior to version 11.40 will continue to use export-based incremental backups.

You can also enable stream-based incremental backups for existing DynamoDB instances.

The system created 12-hour incremental backup schedule for DynamoDB instances is necessary because AWS retains data changes in DynamoDB streams for only 24 hours. If no backup is performed within 20 hours after the most recent incremental backup, Commvault Cloud converts the next incremental backup into a full backup to prevent data loss. By implementing 12-hour stream-based incremental backups, the system ensures data protection while reducing costs.

Before You Begin

On the AWS Console, make sure the Stream status is enabled for all relevant tables. Backups will be skipped for any tables where streams are turned off.

Note

Enabling stream-based incremental backups is an irreversible action. Once enabled, you cannot disable it.

Procedure

  1. From the navigation pane, go to Protect > Databases.

    The database overview page appears.

  2. On the Instances tab, from the list of Instances, select DynamoDB.

The Instances page for cloud databases appears.

  3. Click the DynamoDB instance for which you want to enable stream-based incremental backups.

The Overview page of the instance appears.

  4. On the Configuration tab, in the Settings tile, move the Enable DynamoDB stream based incremental backups toggle key to the right.

Result

All the future incremental backups of the selected instance will be converted to stream-based backups.
