You can add a VMware Linux Backup Gateway (VSA Access node) to protect VMs on a VMware hypervisor. The Linux Backup Gateway can be used for VMs backups, restore, Live Browse, or Live File Recovery operations.
Note
Ensure that different Linux access nodes are used to protect your on-premise and cloud hypervisor workloads to avoid issues with backup and restore operations.
Before You Begin
To deploy a new VMware Linux Backup Gateway, you must download the VMware image file (.OVA) and save the downloaded file to a temporary location on the machine you are working on where the file can be opened using vCenter.
You must deploy the .OVA file from the vCenter, not from the ESX host. Ensure that the OVA is not deployed inside a vApp.
The following vSphere permissions are required to enable deployment or reconfiguration of a Linux Backup Gateway:
Category |
Available Permissions |
---|---|

Downloading the OVA file
-
Log in. You can download the Linux Backup Gateway in two ways:
-
for a new customer: at the right select New Configuration > VMware. The Configure VMware vCenter Hypervisor screen with a backup overview graphic appears.
-
for other customers:
-
from the left Navigation pane, select Protect > Virtualization.
-
Click on Add Hypervisors.
-
Select VMware vCenter and click Next.
-
-
-
On the backup gateway screen, click on the + (plus) icon to the right of the Backup Gateway field.
-
Select the Linux option and the OVA file should start downloading.
Deploying the Linux Backup Gateway
-
In vCenter, right-click any inventory object that is a valid parent object of a virtual machine, such as a data center, folder, cluster, resource pool, or host, and select Deploy OVF Template.
-
The Deploy OVF Template wizard opens and displays the Select an OVA template page.
Note
Supported with vCenter 6.7 and more recent versions. When you deploy an OVA template with vCenter 6.7, configuration options might appear in a different sequence from the following steps, but the information you need to provide is the same.
-
Browse to the location where the Linux Backup Gateway template file is located. Select that file, and then click Next.
The Select a name and folder page appears.
-
Enter a name for the virtual machine (for example, VM_LinuxBackupGateway), select a location, and then click Next.
The Select a Compute Resource page appears.
-
Select the destination compute resource for this operation, and then click Next.
The Review Details page appears.
-
Review the information on the page, and then click Next.
The Configuration page appears.
-
Select the deployment configuration from the choices that appear. When you click on a choice, the Description at the right shows details of the required minimum number of vCPUs, memory, OS disk size, Data Disk size for Disks 1 and 2 for each available choice. Click Next after you select the right deployment configuration.
The Storage page appears.
-
Select the storage parameters from the items on the screen as follows:
-
Encrypt this virtual machine: Select this check box if you want to encrypt the contents of the virtual machine.
-
VM Storage Policy: From the dropdown list, select the appropriate format for the virtual disk:
-
Thick provision eager zeroed
-
Thick provision lazy zeroed
-
Thin provision
-
-
Disable storage DRS for this virtual machine: If the Virtual Server Agent is installed on a VM, select the check box to disable the Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS) for the Linux Backup Gateway.
-
Storage for the configuration and disk files: From the list, select the datastore location.
Click Next.
The Select Networks page appears.
-
-
Select a destination network for each source from the Destination Network dropdown column in each line of the table. The IP Allocation Settings will display for each table when a table line is active. Click Next.
The Customize template page appears.
-
Configure the customized template for the client as follows:
-
Disk Size Configuration: The Software Installation disk size (GB) and Deduplication storage disk size (GB) fields are pre-populated, and do not need to be entered.
-
Client Configuration:
-
Auth Code (required): Enter the authcode that was displayed on the download screen, or the user can go to Manage > Company to view the authcode.
-
Client name (required): Enter the short name for the virtual machine (for example, VM_LinuxBackupGateway).
-
-
Client hostname: Host name or IP address for the client.
-
Networking: The following fields need to be entered when the Linux Backup Gateway is being deployed using a static IP address, or when using DHCP, if there is a possibility that the DHCP server in your environment provides incorrect or incomplete DNS information. The fields below override any DNS configuration that is obtained from the DHCP servers.
-
Use DHCP: Select this option or enter values for the Static IP Address, Netmask, and Gateway. If this option is selected, the other fields can not be filled in. If not, fill in the IP Address, Netmask, Gateway Primary DNS Server and Secondary DNS Server fields that follow
-
DNS Domain: This field is optional for when Use DHCP is checked.
-
VM Hostname (optional): You can add a name for the VM here if desired.
-
-
OS Configuration: The user needs to provide the root user password in the Password and Confirm Password fields.
-
-
Click Next.
The Ready to complete page appears. If you want to change any of the settings, click Back to return to the previous screens.
-
Review the summary, and click Finish to start the deployment of the Linux Backup Gateway.
-
Power on the VM after the deployment completes.
