Commvault Cloud backup gateways handle important functions and use cases.
Backup Gateway Functions
Backup gateways function as both access nodes and MediaAgents:
-
As access nodes, backup gateways connect with, discover, back up, and restore your data source (which the Commvault Cloud control panel cannot access directly by the Commvault Cloud control plane).
-
As MediaAgents, backup gateways move data to and from the access nodes to the storage targets. Backup gateways also perform deduplication operations before moving data to storage targets.
Backup Gateway Use Cases
The following cases require a backup gateway:
-
You want to protect on-premises applications.
-
In addition to a cloud copy of the backup data, you need a local copy.
-
The outbound network security is restricted or blocked from a data source.
-
You want to protect cloud resources in Amazon Web Services (AWS).
For more information about preparing a Commvault Cloud backup gateway for AWS, see System Requirements for an AWS Deployment of a Commvault Cloud Backup Gateway and Configuring Backups for Amazon EC2 Instances.
-
You want to protect cloud resources in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI).
For more information about preparing a Commvault Cloud backup gateway for OCI, see System Requirements for OCI Deployment of a Commvault Cloud Backup Gateway and Configuring Backups for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Virtual Machines.
-
You want to protect database resources in Azure.
For more information, see the page for adding a backup gateway for the Azure database. For example, see Adding a Backup Gateway for Azure Database for MariaDB.
