You can restore a Google Cloud (GC) instance from a backup and attach it to an existing or new instance, using streaming backups, IntelliSnap backups, or backup copies for one or more GC instances.
Before You Begin
- If a passkey is configured for restores, you must have the passkey.
Start the Restore Wizard
-
From the Command Center navigation pane, go to Protect > Virtualization.
The Overview page appears.
-
On the VM groups tab, in the row for the VM group that contains the instance, click the action button
, and then click Restore.
The Select restore type page appears.
-
Select Attach instance to restore disks and attach to new or existing instances.
The Attach disk page appears.
-
To select a specific Backup Gateway and/or source for the restore, in the upper-right area of the page, click Change source.
By default, the Commvault Cloud software automatically selects the MediaAgent and restore from copy as follows:
-
Restore from copy: Select one of the following:
- Automatic (default): The software searches for the requested data in the primary copy. If the data is not found in the primary copy, the software selects a secondary or auxiliary copy.
-
MediaAgent: The software uses the MediaAgent that performed the backup.
-
-
Click on the instance and select the disk to restore. The OS column has two types of disks:
-
OS disk: If OS is present in this column, you can select the instance to:
-
Recover the operating system (including all installed software, configurations, and system files) to a specific point in time using a snapshot or backup.
-
Browse the destination instance from the GC portal and attach a data disk to it.
-
Rename the disk and select the access node.
-
-
Data disk: If the OS column is blank, the Data disk is treated as the default. You can restore the data disk from a previous snapshot or backup, which will recover files or data at a specific point in time.
In GC, both OS disks and data disks can be backed up using snapshots. These snapshots are point-in-time copies of your disks, which can be used to restore the disk later if needed.
-
-
Click Restore.
The Restore Wizard appears.
Attaching a Disk to an Existing GC Instance (Admin Users Only)
When restoring a backup of a GC instance, you can browse the GC portal and select the existing destination instance to which the disk can be attached.
The following steps are performed on the Other instance tab, which appears only for admin users—not for end users.
-
To restore an instance to a different instance, select the hypervisor name from the Destination list.
-
For Access node, select Automatic, an access node, or an access node group.
If you are restoring multiple instances, select Automatic to distribute the workload across the access nodes that are assigned for the destination hypervisor. First, the instances are assigned to access nodes that are in the same zone. Then, instances are assigned to access nodes that are in the same region. The Automatic option is available for full restore and conversion operations from both streaming backups and IntelliSnap backup copies.
-
To select a destination instance, click Browse and select the region to which the restored disk should be attached.
-
If you do not want to receive an email when the backup job completes, unselect the When the job completes, notify me via email checkbox.
-
(OS Disk only) To swap the OS disk of the target instance with the restored OS disk, click Attach and swap OS disk.
-
Click Submit to run the restore job.
Attaching a Disk to an Instance
You can select any backed-up instance in Cloud Storage and attach the disk to that instance.
The following steps are performed on the My instance tab, which appears for both admin users and end users.
-
From the Select instance list, select the existing instance where you want to attach the disk.
-
If you do not want to receive an email when the backup job completes, unselect the When the job completes, notify me via email checkbox.
-
(OS Disk only) To swap the OS disk of the target instance with the restored OS disk, click Attach and swap OS disk.
-
Click Submit to run the restore job.
Attaching a Disk to a New GC Instance
You can create a new instance and attach the disk to it.
The following steps are performed on the New instance tab, which appears for both admin users and end users.
-
From the Restore as list, select the existing instance where you want to attach the disk.
-
From the Destination list, select the instance to associate the new instance with.
-
For Access node, select Automatic, an access node, or an access node group.
-
For Instance display name, enter a descriptive name for the new instance.
-
For Project IDZone, select the destination zone for the restored Instance.
-
(Data Disk only) For Operating system, select the operating system for the restored Instance.
-
(Data Disk only) For Image selection, select the image to create the new instance from.
-
For Machine type, select the machine type for the restored Instance.
-
For Service type, select the service account for the restored Instance.
-
To modify the Network settings, click the Actions button, select Edit, and then specify the following:
-
Virtual network/subnet: Select a different virtual network.
-
Advanced options:
-
Sole-tenant nodes: Select the nodes or node groups that you want to associate with the restored instances.
Note
The Node afinity dialog boxlists all available node groups. However, you can select only node groups that are supported for the specified machine type.
For information about sole-tenant nodes, go to the Google Cloud documentation website, and search for "sole-tenant nodes".
-
Custom metadata: Enter the custom or predefined key-value pairs for the scripts that you want to run when the instance is restored.
The replicated instance will have the key-value pairs in the Custom metadata section on the Instance details page.
For more information about predefined key-value pairs, see the following:
-
Linux: Using startup scripts on Linux VMs on the Google Cloud documentation website.
-
Windows: Using startup scripts on Windows VMs on the Google Cloud documentation website.
-
-
Encryption options: Select an encryption key management management solution:
-
Same as source (default value): The encryption key that is used for the instances that you are restoring.
-
Google-managed encryption key: Keys that are provided and managed by Google Cloud.
To select an encryption key from a different Google Cloud project, click Switch project, and then select the project
-
-
-
-
Power on Instances after restore: Automatically restart instances after they are restored.
-
Unconditionally overwrite if it already exists: Delete an existing instance and replace it with the restored instance.
If an existing instance with the same name exists on the destination host and you do not select Unconditionally overwrite if it already exists, the restore job fails
The power state of the instance does not affect subsequent backups. If the instance is powered on during backups, by default, the instance is powered on again after the restore completes (unless you clear this check box).
-
If you do not want to receive an email when the backup job completes, unselect the When the job completes, notify me via email checkbox.
-
Click Submit to run the restore job.
