Commvault Cloud data protection for Always On Availability Groups provides a disaster-recovery solution for databases on SQL Server 2012 and later. Always On Availability Groups support a failover environment for a set of user databases, known as availability databases, that fail over together. An Availability Group client protects availability databases based on the backup preferences and backup priorities configured for the availability group, and provides a single entry point for initiating backups and restores.
By default, after you install the SQL agent on the primary replica of an Always On cluster, the software automatically discovers new availability groups in the SQL server environment and configures availability group clients and instances.
You can also create a new SQL availability group (AG) instance in Commvault Cloud. An AG group client is created automatically for the availability groups associated with the primary replica.
Procedure
-
From the navigation pane, go to Protect > Databases.
The Overview page appears.
-
Click Add instance, and then select Database server.
The Select Database Type page appears.
-
Select SQL availability group, and then click Next.
The Add SQL availability group instance page appears.
-
From the Primary replica list, select the SQL Server client that is the primary replica of the availability group that you want to back up.
-
From the SQL Server instance list, select an instance.
If the SQL Server client has only one instance, then the instance is automatically selected.
-
For Accounts, select one of the following options:
-
To use a local system user account for the backups, click Use local system account.
-
To use a different Windows user account, click Impersonate User, and then select a saved credential.
Note
The account must be set up on the client and must have Local administrator privileges and be a member of the SQL sysadmin fixed server role for the instance.
-
-
From the Plan list, select the backup plan to use for the instance.
Results
If you have multiple availability groups sharing the same primary replica, all the availability groups will be configured at once.
Considerations
Always On availability groups have the following additional considerations:
-
If the replicas are not Synchronized or Synchronizing, see Article ID: SQL0018.
-
If you have a restricted network configuration, you will need to verify that the communication is open to the ports that are used by the Commvault Cloud software on all the AG clients. The AG clients will not only need communication open to the CommServe and the backup gateways, but the AG clients themselves will need communication open for the software on each node to be able to communicate with each other during backup. The AG client communication that is open to each other is required to help determine which replicas to perform backups based on the configuration.
