To use the Migration Assistant with Windows computers, verify that your system meets the requirements.
Supported Components
Review the components that are migrated using the Migration Assistant.
The user settings files are backed up with a full or an incremental backup that runs subsequently after a synthetic full job. To prevent data such as wallpapers, screen savers, internet cookies, or AppData files, from being included in a backup, create the DisableMigrationAssistantFilesBackup additional setting on the client computer. User settings are not backed up if you enable the additional setting.
Source and Destination Computer Requirements
-
The source computer and the destination computer must be configured as laptop clients.
-
The source computer and the destination computer must have the same version of the Windows operating system, or the destination computer can have a more recent version of the Windows operating system.
-
On the source computer, the Well-Known folders must be backed up using the default backup set and the default subclient. If the source computer has multiple user profiles, you can back up and transfer the Well-Known folders of any user profile to the destination computer.
-
To transfer user profiles, the profiles must be backed up using the default backup set and the default subclient.
Subclient Content Requirements
-
Add the Well-Known folders to the subclient policy of the source computer. For more information, see Adding Well-Known Folders to Backups for Laptop Backup.
-
To back up locked files, enable the Use VSS Options For locked files only check box. For more information on backing up files using VSS, see Using Volume Shadow Service (VSS) to Back Up Files for the Windows File System Agent.
-
To avoid backing up temporary files in the AppData directory, configure C:\Users\**\AppData\*** as your subclient filter. Remember that the user setting files are not backed up when you specify the filter. For the Migration Assistant tool to work and backing up user settings, you must specify the %MigrationAssistant% moniker as an exception in your subclient before you start the backup job.
End-User Requirements
The end-user who performs the migration using the Migration Assistant must meet the following requirements:
-
The end-user must have valid Active Directory credentials.
-
The end-user must be the owner of the source computer and the destination computer. For information about assigning owners, see Configuring Users as Client Owners for Laptop Backups.
-
The end-user must have the following restore permissions. For information about assigning permissions, see Assign User Permissions for Laptop Backup.
