Creating a Virtualization Client for VMware Cloud Director

A VMware Cloud Director virtualization client manages data protection operations for a VMware Cloud Director deployment.

If you have multiple VMware Cloud Director deployments, create a virtualization client for each deployment.

A VMware Cloud Director deployment can include one or more vCenters.

To perform backup operations, each virtualization client can include multiple proxies where the Virtual Server Agent is installed. The virtualization client also enables proxy teaming, enabling proxy failovers for fault tolerant backups. Using multiple proxies for each virtualization client makes it possible to perform backups for a large number of virtual machines in a limited backup window.

Before You Begin

  • Identify user credentials for a VMware Cloud Director user with administrator privileges.

  • If necessary, create virtualization clients for each vCenter included in the VMware Cloud Director deployment.

For each vCenter in the VMware Cloud Director deployment, verify that the vCenter host name specified in the Virtual Server Instance Properties for the Commvault vCenter client matches the hostname or IP address of the vCenter that was added in VMware Cloud Director.

For example, if the vCenter Server was specified using an IP address in VMware Cloud Director, you must enter the same IP address as the vCenter host name when you add the virtualization client in CommCell Console.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, right-click Client Computers, and then click New Client.

The Add New Client dialog box appears.

  2. Under Virtualization, click VMware Cloud Director.

The Create VMware Cloud Director Client dialog box appears.

  3. Specify the following information:

    • Client Name: Enter a descriptive name for the virtualization client.

    • VMware Cloud Director: Enter the fully qualified domain name for VMware Cloud Director.

    • User Name: Enter the user name for a VMware Cloud Director user with administrator privileges.

    • Password: Enter the password for the user.

  4. From the Storage Policy list, select a storage policy to associate with the virtualization client.

The storage policy you select is also associated with the default subclient that is created automatically for the virtualization client.

  5. Add VSA proxies to be used for VMware Cloud Director operations:

    1. Next to Proxies, click Add.

    2. In the Select Clients/Client Groups dialog box, select one or more VSA proxies.

    3. Click OK.

  6. Add vCenters to be used for VMware Cloud Director operations:

    1. Next to vCenters, click Add.

    2. In the Select vCenters dialog box, select one or more vCenters.

    3. Click OK.

  7. Click OK to create the virtualization client.
