The Virtual Server Agent (VSA) provides complete data protection and recovery for virtual machine data, including full virtual machine backups, incremental backups, and synthetic full backups, with support for full VM recovery as well as granular disk and file recovery. The default configuration enables protection for all virtual machines managed by the virtualization platform; you can also configure protection for specific virtual machines or define rules to discover VMs automatically based on criteria such as the host, storage location, and other criteria. When automatic discovery is combined with the ability to define filter rules, you can easily target virtual machines to support different service level agreements (SLAs) and distribute data protection jobs across your available operating window.
To simplify management of virtual machine data, Commvault and the VSA provide a single administration point for different virtualization platforms, policy-based protection, job management, scheduling, and reporting features.
To reduce the impact on production systems and ensure data security, Commvault and the VSA provide enhanced data protection and data transfer features such as proxy-based backups, advanced transport support, hardware-agnostic media management, deduplication, compression, and encryption.
The Virtual Server Agent can be installed on physical or virtual machines, and can be used by itself to protect the entire virtual machine or in conjunction with a guest agent to protect high transaction applications, such as the SQL Server Agent or Exchange Database Agent.
Supported Hypervisors
