Installing Server Packages in a Microsoft Failover Cluster Environment

Applies to: CommServe server, Metrics Reporting, Web Server, and Workflow Engine (if these packages are installed on the computer with the CommServe)

You can install a server package, such as the CommServe software, in a cluster environment by using the installation package that was created from the Download Manager application.

The installation process consists of two main steps: installing the server package on the active node, and installing the server package on the passive nodes of the cluster.

Before You Begin

• Configure Microsoft failover clustering between all the Windows nodes that are included in the Microsoft Failover Cluster Environment using a local administrator domain user account for all the Windows nodes. For more information, see Create a failover cluster.

• Create an installation package by using the Download Manager. The installation package must include the Microsoft SQL Server and the necessary Commvault server packages, such as the CommServe server or Workflow Engine. For more information, see Downloading Software for Windows Computers Using the Download Manager.

• Make sure that you have available cluster disks. The owner node of the cluster disks must be the active physical node.

• If the Microsoft SQL Server is already installed on the cluster nodes, collect the name of the cluster group that was defined during the SQL Server installation.

• Gather the following information that you must provide during the installation for the server packages that you want to install:

  • Preinstallation Checklist for the CommServe

  • Preinstallation Checklist for Metrics Reporting Server

  • Preinstallation Checklist for the Web Server

  • Preinstallation Checklist for the Workflow Engine

    Important

    To be supported in a cluster environment, the Metrics Reporting, Web Server, and Workflow Engine packages must be installed on the computer with the CommServe server.

Procedures

The following instructions describe the steps to install server packages in a cluster environment.

Step 1: Install on the Active Node

1. Log on to the active physical node of the cluster as the domain administrator of the cluster group (also known as Microsoft Failover cluster group).

2. Run Setup.exe from the installation package.

   The installation wizard opens.

3. On the welcome page, select the I Agree check box and then proceed to the next page.

4. On the Choose the Installation Type page, click Install packages on this computer and then proceed to the next page.

5. On the Select Packages page, select one or more of the following server packages, and then proceed to the next page:

   • CommServe

   • Metrics Reporting

   • Web Server

   • Workflow Engine

6. On the Cluster Setup Install Option page, click On Cluster, and then proceed to the next page.

   Note

   • When there is no Microsoft SQL Server installed and configured on the cluster, the Cluster Groups list displays New SQL Server Cluster. The cluster group will be defined in the next page.

   • If you preinstalled the Microsoft SQL Server, select the cluster group that was defined during the SQL Server installation, and then skip step 7 and step 9, below.

7. On the SQL Server Cluster Group Properties page, specify the following details:

   1. In the Instance Name field, enter Commvault.

   2. In the Network Name box, enter the SQL Server network name (the name should not exceed 15 characters). This is the name of the CommServe client, which you will see in the CommCell Browser pane of the CommCell Console. This is the name that will be available on the network for all of the cluster nodes.

   3. In the Cluster Group Name box, the name is provided by default, followed by the SQL Server instance name in parentheses. If needed, you can modify the instance name.

      Tip

      Write down the name of the cluster group, as you will need it during the installation on passive nodes.

   4. In the Cluster Disk Resources section, enter the disks that you want to include in the SQL Server resource cluster group.

   5. In the Cluster Network Settings section, select the available cluster network that is displayed.

   6. For networks that support only IPv4, beside IP Network Settings, select IPv4 only.

      Caution

      Contact your Network Administrator to verify whether your network supports both IPv4 and IPv6 or only IPv4. For the SQL Server and the CommServe server, you can also use the IPv4 only option to configure only IPv4 networks in environments with IPv4-IPv6 networks. If you leave the IPv4 only option cleared, the software attempts to create both IPv4 and IPv6 network resources.

   7. Proceed to the next page.

8. For the Installation Path, Job Results Path, Database Engine Installation Path, and SQL Server Database Installation Path pages, follow the instructions in the installation wizard.

9. On the Cluster SQL Service Log on Account page, enter the user name and password of the domain administrator that is associated with the cluster group, and then proceed to the next page.

10. If you want to use an existing CommServe database, complete the following steps on the Database Install Option page:

    1. Click Use Existing Database, select the CommServ check box, and then proceed to the next page.

       Note

       If you are installing other server packages with the CommServe software, such as the Web Server, and you want to use an existing database, select the check box that corresponds to the database.

    2. On the Database Dump Location page, specify the path to the CommServe database dump file (and to any other database that you selected).

       The dump files are located in your Disaster Recovery (DR) folder, along with other DR backup files.

11. Follow the remaining instructions in the installation wizard.

Step 2: Install on the Passive Nodes

Repeat the following steps on each of the passive nodes where you want to install the server packages.

1. Log on to the passive node of the cluster as the domain administrator of the cluster group (also known as Microsoft Failover cluster group).

2. Run Setup.exe from the installation package.

   The installation wizard opens.

3. On the welcome page, select the I Agree check box and then proceed to the next page.

4. On the Choose the Installation Type page, click Install packages on this computer and then proceed to the next page.

5. On the Select Packages page, select the server packages that you installed on the active node, and then proceed to the next page.

6. On the Cluster Setup Install Option page, select the following options:

   1. Click On Cluster.

   2. From the Cluster Groups list, select the cluster group that was defined during the installation on the active node.

   3. Proceed to the next page.

7. On the Cluster SQL Service Log on Account page, enter the user name and password of the domain administrator that is associated with the cluster group, and then proceed to the next page.

8. Continue to follow the instructions in the installation wizard.
